In addition to providing over 600,000 animals annually, Biocytogen Haimen Animal Center also provides Breeding and Rederivation, Cryopreservation, Colony Maintenance & Rapid Colony Development Services.

Rederivation Services

Even in well kept labs, research rodents may become infected with a variety of environmental pathogens, such as bacteria, viruses and parasites that could potentially invalidate research outcomes. In these cases, rederivation of the strain can eliminate the infection. If this happens, Biocytogen offers rederivation services to remove unwanted microbial contamination from infected mice through in vitro fertilization (IVF). The mice from rederivation will be SPF or higher and will be maintained in a biosecure isolator environment to protect the health of the mice.

Cryopreservation

Sperm Cryopreservation

If you have single mutation and inbred genomic background mice lines with desired longevity, Biocytogen offers mouse sperm cryopreservation services. Cryopreservation is a very secure, cost-efficient conservation approach for genetically modified animal models. At the Haimen Animal Center, our fertilization rate of thawed frozen sperms can be over 30%-50%, particularly with C57BL/6 mice demonstrating high success.

Embryo Cryopreservation

With multiple mutations and strains of unique genetic background, mouse embryo cryopreservation is highly recommended because the recovered mouse lines will maintain the genotype. Embryos of genetically modified animal models can be cryopreserved rapidly by multiple ovulation, IVF or natural co-caging and embryo flushing; thereby, provided that the mice are not sterile, animal maintenance cost is reduced, while limiting genetic drift and loss of phenotype.

Storage of Cryopreserved Rat & Mouse Embryo & Sperm

At Biocytogen, we create models’ backup through cryopreservation. All models are stored at two independent facilities that are equipped with bulk liquid nitrogen storage tanks to avoid the risk of sterilization. We monitor tank temperature and liquid nitrogen level 24 hours a day to make sure we have enough liquid nitrogen for the storage of cryopreserved rat & mouse embryo/sperm.

We provide storage of cryopreserved rat & mouse embryo/sperm for two years, free of charge to our clients. Upon request, animal lines can be recovered in 6-8 weeks.

Shipping of Cryopreserved Rat & Mouse Embryo & Sperm

Cryopreserved rat & mouse embryo/sperm can be stored in our dry LN2 shippers for as long as 21 days. Data logger on each dry LN2 shipper help track the temperature and ensure the temperature is maintained throughout the transportation process. We recommend two separate shipments of each shipped material to avoid the risk of sterilization caused by unexpected delay or damage.

Colony Maintenance and Rapid Colony Development

At Biocytogen Haimen Animal Center, we can breed, expand and maintain a wide variety of mice from inbred to outbred and immunocompetent to immunodeficient, for any colony size of your need. Breeding, colony expansion, and/or maintenance can all be combined with our Gene Editing Services (i.e. generating new animal models through ES cell gene targeting) and Cryopreservation Services (storing mouse strains). We will work with you to optimize your animal use and cage space, dependent on your studies’ needs.
