Rederivation Services

Colonies of research rodents may be infected with a variety of environmental pathogens, such as bacteria, viruses and parasites that could potentially invalidate research outcome. Biocytogen offers rederivation services to remove unwanted microbial contamination from such infected mice by in vitro fertilization (IVF). The rederived mice will be SPF or higher and will be maintained in a biosecure isolator environment to protect the health of the mice.

Cryopreservation

Sperm Cryopreservation

Mouse sperm cryopreservation is suited for single mutation and inbred genomic background mouse line. It is a very secure and cost-efficient conservation approach particularly for genetically modified animal models. In Haimen Animal Center, the fertilization rate of thawed frozen sperms can be 30% or higher, and can be over 50% in C57BL/6 mice.

Embryo Cryopreservation

Mouse Embryo Cryopreservation is suited for multiple mutations and strains with unique genetic background. The recovered mouse line will remain the same genotype. Embryos of genetically modified animal models can be cryopreserved rapidly by multiple ovulation, IVF or natural co-caging and embryo flushing; thereby, provided that the mice are not sterile, animal maintenance cost is reduced, and also limits genetic drift and prevents loss of phenotype.

Storage of Cryopreserved Rat & Mouse Embryo & Sperm

At Biocytogen, we create models’ backup through cryopreservation. All models are stored at two independent facilities that are equipped with bulk liquid nitrogen storage tanks to avoid the risk of sterilization. We monitor tank temperature and liquid nitrogen level 24 hours a day to make sure we have enough liquid nitrogen for storage of cryopreserved rat & mouse embryo/sperm.

In addition, we provide storage of cryopreserved rat & mouse embryo/sperm for two years free of charge to our clients. Upon request, animal lines can be recovered in a 6-8 weeks.

Shipping of Cryopreserved Rat & Mouse Embryo & Sperm

Cryopreserved rat & mouse embryo/sperm can be stored in our dry LN2 shippers for as long as 21 days. Data logger on each dry LN2 shipper help track the temperature and ensure the temperature is maintained throughout the transportation process. We recommend two separate shipment of each shipped material to avoid the risk of sterilization caused by unexpected delay or damage.

Colony Maintenance and Rapid Colony Development

At Biocytogen Haimen Animal Center, we can breed, expand and maintain a wide variety of mice from inbred to outbred, immunocompetent to immunodeficient, to the colony size of your need. Colony expansion and/or maintenance can be combined with our Gene Editing Services (generation of new animal models from ES cell gene targeting to gene transmission in F1 offspring) and Cryopreservation services  (preservation of your mouse strain) to optimize your animal use and cage space to meet your need.
