    Introduction

Developing a new drug for human use is a lengthy and costly process that takes an average of 10 years or more and costs approximately $2.6 billion. Yet, when one considers the number of people a successful drug can help, the return on investment can be astounding.

Before a drug goes to market, its efficacy, safety, and mechanism of action (MOA) must be thoroughly understood. Animal models for research work to minimize adverse side effects and maximize therapeutic properties of a drug before it is taken to clinical trials. Biocytogen is a one-stop CRO that provides humanized mouse models for immuno-oncology and autoimmune/inflammatory disease targets, which can help move projects from target to IND application.

    Animal Models for Research
Animal models are essential tools for basic research and drug development. Leveraging our advanced gene-editing technologies, Biocytogen has developed over 5,000 animal and cell models, including genetically modified mice, humanized mouse models, immunodeficient mice & rats and their second-generation models, other specialized mouse models, and humanized cell lines. Our innovative models are at the forefront of advancing research and accelerating the development of new therapies.
Biocytogen utilizes advanced gene-editing technologies to modify specific gene loci in mice while keeping other genes and physiological systems unchanged to develop humanized mouse models. This approach enables precise investigation of human gene functions and their roles in disease development.
The related animal models cover a wide range of research areas, including oncology, autoimmune diseases, metabolic disorders, and neurology. Leveraging its extensive experience in animal model development, Biocytogen designs detailed and scientifically rigorous strategies, carefully considering all factors that may influence gene expression. This ensures the stability and reliability of gene expression and significantly enhances the consistency and reproducibility of the models.

Since our inception in 2009, our strong focus on genetic engineering has led to the creation of multiple mouse strains for preclinical efficacy testing and antibody drug discovery. More recently, our team has been developing gene knockout mouse models targeting key drug discovery genes to facilitate mechanistic studies, target validation, and preclinical research. For this purpose, we are proud to introduce over 800 new strains of knockout mice, now available to researchers worldwide for in vivo modeling and translational drug development.

    • Holds the highest level of immunodeficiency among all existing immunodeficient mouse models
    • Longer lifespan than NOD-scid or NSG mice; average lifespan of ~1.5 years
    • Minimal to no rejection of human-derived cells and tissues
    • Highly efficient for CDX model generation
    • No B lymphocyte leakage observed
To address challenges in immune system reconstruction in severely immunodeficient mice, Biocytogen has developed second-generation models based on the B-NDG strain. These advanced models provide robust support for tumor immunotherapy and other preclinical research applications.

Aged mice serve as an effective in vivo model for studying human aging and its drug development. They replicate key physiological characteristics of the elderly, including declining organ function and weakened immune responses, and they closely mirror human pathologies such as Alzheimer's disease, osteoporosis, and tumor microenvironment alterations. This animal model enables researchers to investigate how aging influences drug dynamics— from absorption and metabolism to target interactions. Consequently, aged mice play a crucial role in bridging laboratory discoveries with clinical applications in translational medicine and preclinical research.

Biocytogen has developed various Cre mice and DTR mice with gene expression specific to certain tissues or cell types. Additionally, Biocytogen has developed reporter mice, which enable researchers to observe gene expression at the tissue or cellular level using experimental instruments when the reporter gene is expressed.
These specialized in vivo models facilitate real-time gene expression monitoring, cell labeling, and lineage tracing studies, supporting a wide range of preclinical and genetic research applications.

Biocytogen, with over a decade of gene engineering experience, has successfully developed and modified a wide range of human and animal cell lines. The company integrates advanced gene-editing technologies such as EGE and ES, and has created humanized cell lines targeting immune checkpoints (e.g., PD-L1), tumor-specific antigens (e.g., HER2, TROP2), and other immune cell–associated models.
These humanized and transgenic cell lines are relevant to colon cancer, melanoma, hepatocellular carcinoma, breast cancer, and other solid tumor models. These advancements have greatly improved the efficiency of research and development in tumor immunotherapy, monoclonal antibody, bispecific antibody, polyclonal antibody, tumor vaccine, and ADC drug optimization.

    Applications of Animal Models

Due to species differences, wild-type mice often fail to accurately evaluate human-specific drugs. At Biocytogen, we have developed drug target humanized mouse models—one of the most versatile animal models for in vivo evaluation. These in vivo models are created by replacing mouse genes with their human counterparts, allowing drug candidates to interact with humanized targets. This enables precise in vivo assessments of drug efficacy, toxicity, and pharmacokinetics & pharmacodynamics (PK&PD), providing a reliable foundation for translational research.

Targets of our humanized mouse models cover immune-checkpoint, tumor microenvironment (TME) modulators and tumor-associated antigens (TAA) for oncology research,cytokines/cytokine receptors and other biomarkers related to autoimmune and inflammatory diseases, as well as metabolic and neurological disorders.

    Advantages of Our Animal Models
    Well-designed

Using the advanced gene editing platform, our experts team professionally designs the genetic modifications in target humanized mice. These genetically humanized mice exhibit expression profiles similar to humans, ensuring that humanized genes do not interfere with the mice's signaling pathways or functions.

    Comprehensive Validation Data

Our animal models have comprehensive validation data, including genotypic and phenotypic analysis, functional assays and in vivo studies.

    Large-scale Breeding

Supported by a high-quality animal center, we provide large-scale breeding services that minimize variation among individual mice and experimental batches. This ensures consistency and reliability in preclinical studies, contributing to more robust and reproducible research outcomes.

    Independent Intellectual Property Rights

Our animal models are independently developed and fully owned by us, holding independent intellectual property rights, which provide clients with reliable and secure research tools that ensure the integrity and reproducibility of experimental data.
